Deerdate — Privacy Policy
Last updated: 25 August 2026
This describes what Deerdate collects, why, and what you can do about it. It is written to be read, not to be defensible. If something here is unclear, that is a bug — write to us.
The short version
- Deerdate is pseudonymous by default. You are not asked for your real name. A real photo is optional: nothing requires you to upload one, and an uploaded photo is labelled as unverified.
- We do not sell your data, and there are no advertising or analytics trackers in the app.
- Everything the app holds about you can be exported or deleted from inside the app, in two taps.
- Voice conversations are not recorded or stored, with one narrow exception described below, which exists so that someone who is harassed can prove it.
Who we are
Deerdate is operated by the person named at the bottom of this page. Data is stored on a server we run ourselves in Nuremberg, Germany. We do not use a third-party cloud provider for your conversations.
What we collect
When you sign in. Deerdate uses Google or Apple sign-in. We receive and store an identifier for your account with that provider, and your email address if the provider supplies one. We never receive your password.
When you set up your profile. A display name you choose, a generated handle, a seed for your illustrated avatar, how you eat chay, and your year of birth. We ask for the year rather than a full date of birth because a year is all we need to confirm you are 18 or over.
If you choose to upload a real photo. It is optional, never required, and we do not verify it; the app says plainly that photos are unverified. The photo shows wherever your illustrated avatar would show, to everyone, and you can remove it again at any time. Keeping it is your choice, and it is expression, never proof of identity.
When you use the app. The conversations you are part of and the messages you send, which tables you joined, and anything you report or block. Messages are stored so you can read them again later.
Technical data. Ordinary server logs, kept briefly for reliability and abuse handling.
What we do not collect
- No photograph of you, unless you choose to upload one.
- No location data.
- No contacts or address book.
- No advertising identifiers, and no third-party analytics. There is no Google Analytics, no Facebook SDK, no attribution tracking in this app.
Voice conversations
Voice at a table is live only. It passes through our server to the other people at the table and is not written to disk.
The one exception: the app keeps roughly the last fifteen minutes of a table in memory so that if someone reports what was just said, there is something to look at. That buffer is discarded when the table ends and is never written to storage — unless a report is filed, in which case only the segment relevant to that report is saved so a moderator can review it.
Saved report audio is transcribed on our own server and kept for 90 days after the report is resolved, then deleted.
We chose this deliberately. Recording every conversation would cost us very little. But these conversations are often about family conflict and being judged, and a permanent archive of them would be a liability to the people it is meant to protect.
Why we are allowed to hold this (GDPR)
- To provide the service — your profile, conversations and messages. This is necessary to perform our agreement with you.
- To keep people safe — reports, blocks, and report audio. This is our legitimate interest in running a service where people are not harassed, and a legal expectation of app stores.
- To meet our obligations — retaining a record that a report was handled.
Who we share it with
Nobody, for commercial purposes. Specifically:
- We do not sell personal data.
- We do not share data for advertising.
- Your display name, avatar, handle and how you eat chay are visible to people you are matched or seated with. That is the product.
- We disclose data to law enforcement only where we are legally required to.
How long we keep it
| What | How long |
|---|---|
| Profile and messages | Until you delete your account |
| Report audio and transcripts | 90 days after the report is resolved |
| Server logs | A short operational period |
| Deleted accounts | See below |
Your rights, and how to use them
Everything below is available inside the app, under You.
- See everything we hold. You → Your data → Show me everything. It returns your profile, your conversations, every message you sent, and everything you reported or blocked.
- Delete your account. You → Delete my account. Your name, avatar and sign-in are removed immediately and cannot be restored.
- Block someone. From any conversation or seat. Blocking works both ways and takes effect on their next message, not at their next sign-in.
- Report someone. One tap from any person, anywhere in the app.
One thing to understand about deletion. Messages you already sent stay in the other person's conversation, with your name removed. We do this because deleting them would take away half of somebody else's conversation, which they also have a right to. If you need a message removed for a reason other than account deletion, write to us.
Under GDPR you also have the right to object to processing, to request correction, and to complain to your local data protection authority. Contact us first and we will try to sort it out.
Age
Deerdate is for people aged 18 and over. We ask your year of birth when you join and do not let you finish signing up if you are younger. If you believe a child is using Deerdate, report them in the app or write to us and we will act. See our Child Safety Standards.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will tell you in the app before it takes effect, not by quietly editing this page.
